When Her Family’s Savings Ran Out, She Found a Cleaner Way Forward

In a small village near Vadakara, Kerala, Reena faced a quiet crisis. Her husband’s declining health meant stable employment was no longer possible, and their household relied on savings that were quickly vanishing. With each passing month, the uncertainty grew heavier.

Determined not to let her family fall into financial distress, Reena began searching for ways to contribute. She had always been interested in natural products and found herself drawn to the idea of creating eco-friendly bathroom and cleaning solutions. What began as a series of home experiments soon became a tentative livelihood. But without formal training, her early batches were inconsistent. Customers were curious but hesitant. She lacked the knowledge to refine her products or reach a wider market.

That changed when Reena enrolled in the Skill LEAP training programme offered by ESAF Foundation. The programme, designed to support aspiring women entrepreneurs, offered not just technical training but something more vital: confidence and clarity.

During the course, Reena learned to make high-quality cleaning products using safe, eco-friendly ingredients. The sessions were hands-on and practical. With the help of trainers and fellow participants, she refined her techniques and started developing a product line that was both effective and sustainable.

The programme did not stop at production. Reena also received guidance on how to build a business, from understanding local markets to designing a pricing strategy. She worked with mentors to draft a business plan, laying out clear goals and a roadmap for growth. For the first time, her efforts felt structured and supported.

After completing the training, Reena officially launched her line of eco-friendly cleaning solutions. Her products, which included bathroom cleaners, laundry detergents and surface sprays, found a receptive market. She sold them at local gatherings, markets and through a simple doorstep delivery model.

Word spread quickly. Customers appreciated the quality and the eco-conscious values behind the brand. Reena’s profits steadily grew, reaching ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 per month. What had started as a necessity had become a source of pride and a stable income.

Her business did more than support her household. It sparked something larger. Other women in the community began asking her for advice, curious to start their own ventures. Reena shared her experience openly, encouraging them to consider skill training and take the first step.

Today, Reena stands not just as a successful entrepreneur, but as a quiet force of inspiration in her village. Her journey reflects the promise of what targeted training and community support can do to shift the possibilities for many women.
